6 cars collided in Visalia due to a driver who was under the influence of alcohol.

On the evening of June 5th, 2023 in Visalia, a driver allegedly under the influence of alcohol rear-ended another vehicle, setting off a chain reaction involving 5 other cars.
The incident occurred at approximately 7:30PM on June 5th, 2023 on Mooney Boulevard near Caldwell Avenue (Visalia Police Department, 2023). According to eyewitness statements, a westbound 2005 Honda Civic driven by a 39-year-old man failed to stop in time and rear-ended a Toyota Corolla that was slowing for traffic.

The initial impact caused a chain reaction involving four other vehicles - a Ford F-150 pickup truck, a Chevrolet Silverado, and two more sedans (Toyota Camry and Nissan Altima). Three individuals in the Camry and Silverado complained of neck and back pain and were transported to Kaweah Health Medical Center for treatment of minor injuries.

Responding officers detected signs of alcohol impairment from the Honda driver, who showed poor balance and slurred speech. A breathalyzer test at the scene registered his blood alcohol content (BAC) at 0.117%, well above California's legal limit of 0.08% (VPD, 2023). He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of DUI causing injury.

The crash is still under investigation. However, this incident provides valuable context on the preventable dangers of drunk driving, which according to the NHTSA (2022) accounts for nearly one-third of all traffic fatalities annually in the United States.
