A drunk driver ran away from the scene of an accident that killed his girlfriend

On the night of May 15th, 2023 in Queens, an allegedly intoxicated motorist lost control of their vehicle and struck their passenger, killing her.
The collision occurred at approximately 11:30PM on May 15th, 2023 on Northern Boulevard near 50th Street in Queens, New York City (NYPD, 2023). The driver, a 27-year old male, was operating a 2005 Honda Civic with his 29-year old girlfriend in the front passenger seat. According to witnesses and video surveillance footage, the driver lost control while traveling at high speed, veered off the roadway and struck a street sign and tree (Queens County District Attorney, 2023).

Upon impact, the passenger was partially ejected from the vehicle. The driver then fled the scene on foot, abandoning the crashed Honda. Nearby residents called 911 to report the accident. Responding emergency personnel transported the critically injured passenger to a local hospital where she was pronounced dead due to multiple traumatic injuries. Her identity has not been publicly disclosed at this time.

Police utilized license plate and vehicle registration records to identify and locate the registered owner of the Honda, matching his description to video of the driver. He was found hiding in a residential neighborhood approximately 2 miles from the crash site and arrested. A subsequent breathalyzer test revealed his BAC to be 0.158%, nearly twice the legal limit. He has been charged with vehicular manslaughter, leaving the scene of an accident involving a fatality, and DUI. The investigation is ongoing.
