An accident in California with an injured driver and a police officer
The incident occurred at approximately 11:30PM on July 10th, 2023 at the intersection of Manchester Boulevard and Inglewood Avenue (Inglewood Police Department, 2023). According to witnesses and security footage, a southbound 2005 Toyota Camry disregarded a red light and struck the driver's side of an eastbound 2020 Ford Explorer police cruiser (IPD, 2023).
The 27-year-old male driver of the Camry and 35-year-old female police officer were both trapped in their vehicles following the high-speed impact. Firefighters extricated them and paramedics transported both to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries - the officer suffered a broken leg and the driver sustained rib fractures and a concussion (IPD, 2023).
At the hospital, the driver consented to a blood alcohol test which revealed a BAC of 0.122%, in excess of California's legal 0.08% limit. He was subsequently placed under arrest for DUI causing injury. The investigation is ongoing, but this incident yet again demonstrates the preventable dangers of alcohol-impaired driving and reinforces the need for evidence-based solutions to curb such harmful behaviors.
