The driver who caused the car to roll over in Newton has been charged with drunk driving

On the night of September 1st, 2023 in Newton, a motorist's sport utility vehicle (SUV) veered off the road and overturned in a ditch. The 45-year-old driver was charged with drunk driving (DWI) and assault by auto due to the crash risks (Newton Police Department, 2023).Responding officers detected signs of alcohol impairment from the driver, who showed slurred speech and difficulty maintaining balance (NPD, 2023). A roadside breathalyzer test registered his BAC at 0.14%, nearly twice New Jersey’s legal limit of 0.08% (NPD, 2023).

The man was extricated from the rolled vehicle by firefighters with only minor injuries and transported to a local hospital as a precaution. However, due to the high-risk nature of the crash and his level of intoxication, he was subsequently charged with DWI as well as assault by auto, a felony offense, for endangering others through his actions (NPD, 2023).

This incident once more underscores the need for strong deterrents against drunk driving, which claims over 10,000 lives in the U.S. each year according to the latest NHTSA data.
