Mother and Son Killed in Ocala Crash After Police Missed Possible DUI

October 1, 2026 · Ocala, Florida · News update published September 30–October 1; the collision occurred early September 29.

A mother and her adult son died in an Ocala crash after police failed to investigate possible impairment during an earlier encounter with the occupants of the other vehicle, according to local reporting. The case has prompted an internal investigation into how officers handled the encounter.

Warning Signs Before the Collision

FOX 35 Orlando reported that body-camera footage showed officers speaking with two brothers before the crash. Police Chief Mike Balken said one acknowledged drinking, yet officers allowed them to leave without investigating DUI. The chief said there were indications both men may have been impaired.

According to WFTV, the initial encounter involved a vehicle partly blocking traffic in the 2400 block of State Road 200. The brothers were arguing about who would drive home.

Mother and Son Died at the Scene

The collision occurred at Southeast Maricamp Road and Southeast 36th Avenue. A 50-year-old woman and her 31-year-old son died at the scene, WKMG / ClickOrlando reported.

Officer Placed on Leave

WKMG reported that the lead officer was placed on paid administrative leave and had completed field training only about a month earlier. The internal inquiry was expected to take approximately four weeks.

The outlet also reported that prosecutors did not consider the officer's conduct to meet the threshold for a criminal offense. That assessment concerns the officer; it does not resolve the separate traffic homicide investigation.

What Remains Under Investigation

Possible impairment is central to the reporting, but it should not be presented as a proven DUI conviction. The questions now include what the crash investigation establishes and what the department concludes about the missed opportunity to investigate.
